Blog Post #2
I really haven't used Microsoft Word as a student. There was this time in middle school that I tried to use it because everything was through Google docs and I wanted to be different, but I couldn't get the hang of it. It just felt weird to me and I was uncomfortable with it, so I haven't used it much since. I have always preferred Google Docs for that reason and I have only used it since. I just find it a lot more simple and user friendly because of the tabs and categorization.
I have always kind of been interested in the idea of a digital footprint. In middle school, I always thought that it was a physical footprint. Of course, as a middle schooler I didn't realize that digital things weren't physical. As I have gotten older, I have realized that anything I do online can be seen by anyone at anytime and is never safe from prying eyes.
I don't agree with the "digital native" label because in reality, I am not really a digital native. Now obviously, I have grown up around technology everywhere around me, but I really do not think that I am good with technology like a lot of other people. People I know can build a PC and know specs about technology, I can't do that. I do know things that older people do not know, like how to change printer ink at work (that really happens). I have learned that I do know things many don't, but it has also taught me that I am still learning about technology. I anticipate that younger people will know more than I will, that just naturally happens, but since I won't be teaching, it won't be a part of my daily life until I have kids later in life.
I agree that Google Docs is easier to use than MS Word. I also used Google throughout middle and high school, and I just find it superior to other doc platforms. Having to use MS Word now in college is difficult for me, therefore, something I avoid at every chance I get. I will only use it if it is specified by the professor that it must be used for an assignment. Otherwise, I will just type up a Google Doc, then save it as a PDF to submit it to Canvas.
ReplyDeleteI have personally never tried Google Docs until I attended FSU, but with the little time I have had using it, I have enjoyed it. I like the way you described digital footprint, I think it is very important to be careful with the things you are posting and liking online. I also agree with the term "digital native", there is definitely a gap in technological knowledge between generations.
